Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a golf simulator?
A golf simulator is a system of hardware and software components that track club and ball launch conditions and ball-flight then simulates what the ball would have done in the real world in a virtual golf environment.
The FSG simulator is a turn-key package. It includes a projector, computer, touchscreen, dual ball-tracking technologies, golf course software, enclosure, hitting screen, hitting mat, wiring, and all necessary components to accurately track the ball and realistically simulate golf.
- Who is using golf simulators?
FSG sims are featured in thousands of commercial environments such as golf retailers, private and public golf courses, sports bars, recreation and indoor golf centers, teaching and training facilities, hotels and resorts, colleges and universities, health and fitness clubs, military bases, and many more commercial applications.
FSG sims are also featured in many homes of PGA TOUR pros and thousands of homes of world leaders of business, athletics, politics and entertainment. When quality, accuracy, realism, and reliability are more important than price, the clear choice is Full Swing Golf.
- What can a golf simulator do for me?
The FSG simulator has many applications. Many customers are focused on game-improvement, teaching and training, and/or club-fitting. Others are focused on entertainment and spending time with friends and family. PGA TOUR pros use their FSG sims for serious practice and data analysis. Whatever application FSG customers have in mind for private or commercial use, the FSG sim is built to perform.
- How does it work?
The FSG sim uses dual ball-tracking technologies that feed the golf software the information needed to render true ball-flight.
The FSG patented Infrared tracking system actually measures the golf ball’s speed, launch angle and direction at the speed of light. No other measurement device or technology can measure these ball-flight characteristics more accurately or rapidly… period.
Ion2 Vision Technology, FSG’s proprietary high-speed camera system, measures ball spin characteristics such as back spin, side spin and spin axis… without extra markings on the ball. This camera also captures extensive club head data such as club speed, club path and club face angle.
Seamless integration of these technologies ensure accurate collection of data and instant infusion of that data into the golf simulation software, which renders the ball-flight and shot performance in the virtual environment, as if it happened outdoors.
- How accurate is it?
There isn’t a scale or metric for measuring accuracy of the real world vs. the virtual world of our simulator or any other. However, based on years of scientific study and customer feedback, FSG sims are incredibly accurate.
FSG engineers have used every technology in and out of golf to validate our technologies and data. If PGA TOUR pros trust FSG for serious practice and data analysis, all FSG customers can expect nothing but the most accurate experience on the market.
- What is real time ball flight?
Real-time ball-flight is the seamless and instant transition of the golf ball from real world to virtual world. Have you ever seen golf simulators on TV or online and noticed the delay or hiccup that happens when the ball hits the screen before seeing the virtual ball fly into the virtual world? Radar, sonar, and camera-based technologies have inherent latency, meaning it takes time to collect and process data before rendering ball flight.
FSG uses infrared light to track launch conditions, then the data is collected and processed at the speed of light, so the virtual ball instantaneously continues into the virtual world when the real ball hits the screen. The FSG virtual ball flight starts at the exact point on the screen where the real ball hits and continues seamlessly on the same trajectory.
Real-time ball flight promotes a more realistic feeling experience, especially in the short game. A chip usually flies for less than a second. Other simulators have 0.5 to 2 seconds of latency, which really disconnects the golfer from the feel of the chip and gives the short game in golf simulation a bad rap. A chip on the FSG sim flies, lands, and rolls in a natural, seamless, realistic way. – the way that you’d expect it to look and feel around the greens.
- Do I need special clubs or balls?
The FSG sim does not require special clubs, markings on the club or markings on the ball. Grab any club or ball off the rack and you’re ready.
Other systems require either special markings on the club or ball… or both. You don’t see these markings out on the course, so you don’t want to see them in your sim either.
- How do the graphics look?
FSG features the newest installment of E6 golf, the most celebrated and universal golf software platform available. E6 1.6 features include improved texture resolution which significantly upgrades the look of each golf course, changes to the software engine lighting for a more life-like feel, and enhanced physics which improve the playability. The trees blow in the wind, waves crash, streams run, and lakes ripple.
E6 provides golfers with a living, breathing, 3D virtual environment. FSG customers enjoy the highest degree of accuracy and realtime rendering in the most lifelike and realistic golf software in the industry.
- What kind of teaching and training aids are available?
FSG offers extensive teaching and training technologies for serious game improvement. Ion2 Vision Technology, which is standard with every unit, gives you club head speed, club face angle, club path, and detailed ball spin data.
Swing Catalyst, an optional high-speed video and balance analysis solution, captures slow motion video and balance transfer data for the golfer and pro. Seeing these two essential visuals allows the user to review and assess what’s right and wrong in a golfer’s swing.
The FSG Sim with Ion2 Vision Technology combined with Swing Catalyst give teachers, trainers, and golfers all the tools they need to analyze, correct, and improve.
- Will the golf simulator fit in my space?
FSG sims come in dozens of sizes to accommodate nearly any space. The flagship model, the Widescreen Champion, is nearly 17’ wide, 10’ tall and 22’ long with a 210” screen. The smallest configuration of the Original Champion is 11’6” wide, 8’6” tall, and 17’6” long. If you can swing a club in your proposed simulator space, it’s likely that FSG has a simulator model that will fit well.
- What is the putting experience like?
FSG handles putting differently than any other simulator. The real-time, infrared tracking system promotes seamless transitions for putts rolling from real-world to virtual world.
Other simulators on the market have a virtual ball on the screen before the putt is hit in the real world. When the putt is hit in the real world, the virtual ball starts rolling before the real ball hits the screen, which most would agree creates a disconnect in the feel of putting.
In the FSG sim, the putt rolls to the screen and seamlessly continues virtually on the same path at the same speed into the virtual green, and hopefully into the hole!
- How many courses do you have?
93 championship courses, including 30 of Golf Digest's and Golfweek's "Greatest Courses”. FSG will add at least 4 new courses per year, often many more than 4.
Only 6 courses in the FSG library are fantasy courses, the rest are real, licensed replicas of real world courses, emulated in great detail. Other simulators may tout a significant course library, but often the courses offered are fantasy courses or unlicensed imitations.
- How does golf simulation help grow the game of golf?
FSG is committed to helping to grow the game of golf. Industry indicators show that traditional golf courses are having problems on a variety of fronts, with cost, pace of play, competition for the attention of youth, accessibility and playability being some of the major challenges. Golf simulation is a powerful asset to the game of golf, in so many ways
Kids love screens. We’ve combined screens and golf, the best of both worlds, kids just get it instantly. Simulators bring kids to the game of golf, and the game of golf to the kids.
We have dozens of customers whose wives and daughters have picked up the game as a result of owning our simulator. The range and the course can be an intimidating place to try to learn, the simulator provides a private, safe environment for women to fall in love with the game.
So many golfers are lost during the winter months, the clubs go into storage and never come out again. Many of our golf course customers are able to continue their fall leagues right through the winter on the simulators then into the spring again. They can hang on to their teaching and food/beverage staff and revenues.
Pace of play
Time is short, and we all have less of it. A round on the simulator is half the time of a round outdoors. No more driving up to your ball, or looking for it. The simulator gives golfers more reps in less time, more data, and keeps the game action packed.
A rounds of golf at your local indoor golf center, course clubhouse, rec center or sports bar is usually less than an outdoor round.
- Can a golf simulator do more than golf?
FSG sims are multipurpose sims. Connect your DVR, DVD, Bluray, Xbox, Playstation, Wii or any other type of media device that can be projected on a screen. FSG projectors are HD, 4000 lumens or more, with excellent performance ratings for golf and multimedia applications. Play golf or watch the big game or your favorite movie on our sim. FSG helps you and your family make the most of your space and investment.
